Object: Auxiliary Diesel Generator (ADG No. 2) on a vessel (Vladivostok Roadstead)
The Problem: 
The initial request was for the inspection of a single cylinder due to water leakage into the crankcase. However, upon disassembly, a "domino effect" was discovered: scuffing and signs of overheating were found on five out of six cylinders. Simply replacing the parts was not an option—without identifying the root cause, the failure would have recurred within a week.
The Solution:
A VLPACIFIC surveyor conducted a comprehensive technical investigation:

• Component Inspection: The condition of the connecting rod and main bearings was checked (they were found to be normal), which ruled out general oil starvation.
  
• Operating Conditions Analysis: It was established that the engine had been started at an extreme ambient temperature of –27°C without pre-heating the lube oil (oil temperature at startup was only 15°C).
  
• Chronology Reconstruction: The expert proved that due to high viscosity, the cold oil lubricated the crankshaft but failed to reach the cylinders in sufficient volume, leading to the cylinder scuffing.
  

The Result: 
The shipowner received more than just a repaired engine; they were provided with an official report identifying the true cause of the failure. This allowed the company to adjust winter maintenance protocols across their entire fleet, preventing similar accidents on other vessels.
